Urban Altars and Tools

Sometimes urban Witches have to do things a little differently, be it because of space, roommates, lease restrictions, etc. Setting up an altar is one of those instances.

Many books suggest what an altar should contain and how it should look. But an altar can truly be what you want it to be. Some crafty Witches have used their fireplace mantle or even the top of their television, and why not, it is the central focus of the room.

If you can't burn candles, use a string of lights. Instead of incense, use air fresheners. Don't want to be obvious about the chalice, use a shot glass, regular drinking cup, or even a paper or plastic cup. Pocket knifes, nail file or even scissors or letter openers can be athames. A snow globe could represent water. A retractable pointer, as used in business can serve as a wand. Need a cauldron, grab a pan.

No Witch really needs an extensive herb collection. The basics that you have in your spice rack will suffice. Don't have a mortar and pestle? A blender or food processor work wonders for blending herbs and tough resin. An automatic drip coffee pot works wonders for making brews. Slow cookers and potpourri pots are great for making your own oils.

Envelopes, glue, rubber bands and needle and thread are great for binding.
Instead of the traditional gemstones, try these urban stones: quartz, marble, granite, slate, tar, pitch, asphalt and/or construction rubble.

The possibilities are endless.
