Sigils

Sigils are a type of magickal symbol. It can be a seal, sign, glyph (sculptured character or symbol) or other device used in a magickal working. The most powerful sigils are those that you create yourself.

There are several types of sigils. Two of the most common are word and graffiti sigils.

Word sigils are made by taking a statement of your intention and reducing it to key letters. Those letters are then combined to make a symbol to be used in magick, charms or ritual.

Here is an example of how I created my favorite sigil. I took the phrase: The Goddess Protects Us All. I narrowed it down to the following letters: GPUA. I then went about rearranging those letters. I decided that instead of a G for Goddess, I wanted to use the triple goddess symbol. I then incorporated the remaining letters to form the following symbol. I added the pentacle for extra protection. Here is the finished result:

Graffiti sigils are evident all over for city Witches, from spray painted buildings and overpasses, to sidewalk chalk drawings, to doodles on a teenager's notebook. It's modern-day cave art.

It follows the same idea as word sigils, only instead of letters, you want to use symbols or images. For example, I took the same idea as before only this time, I used a silver symbol of the triple goddess inside a white pentacle. Notice that the idea is to be impressionistic, not necessarily exact. All that is important is that you know what it means. Anyone else looking at this would think it is mere scribble but I know it holds power.

The best way to create sigils is just to play around, like a child in art class. These are specific symbols of power for you; no one else needs to be able to recognize your intentions for these symbols so don't worry about perfection. There is no right or wrong.
