Deities
Wiccans
call upon the deities to help themselves. The Goddess and God can
help us change our lives. Because the Deities are the creative forces
of the universe, not just symbols, we can call upon them to empower
our rites and to bless our magick. That power is in the hands of
every practitioner. We have direct links to the Deities. The Deities
dwell within us (Scott
Cunningham).
The
All
Wicca acknowledges
a supreme divine power, unknowable, ultimate from which the entire
universe sprang. (Scott
Cunningham). We refer to that divine power as The All. Wiccans
link to that force through their deities.
The All
is an energy field polarized by two forces, the Goddess and the
God, which in their ultimate being are aspects of each other. The
God is a polar image of the Goddess. The Goddess and God are the
same forces flowing in opposite but not opposed directions. That
polarity creates the cycle that underlies the movements of the stars
and the changing seasons, the harmony of the natural world and the
evolution within out human lives. (Starhawk)
Wicca
recognizes Deity as dual. It reveres both the Goddess and the God.
They are equal, warm and loving, not distant or resident in "heaven"
but omnipresent throughout the universe. The Goddess and the God
are both within ourselves and manifest in all nature. There is nothing
that isn't of the Goddess and God (Scott
Cunningham).
The Goddess and God are
the same force flowing in opposite, but not opposed directions.
The
Goddess
"The Goddess does
not rule the world; she is the world." Manifested in each of
us, she can be known internally by every individual, in all her
magnificent diversity. Starhawk
The Goddess is the universe itself, not something separate from
or superior to it. (Eileen
Holland)
There are three aspects
of the Goddess represented by the three phases of the moon:
1. Maiden (waxing moon) - virgin patroness of birth
2. Nymph/Mother (full moon) - Sexual temptress, she mates and procreates
3. Crone (waxing moon) - The dark forces, wise
The Goddess is the Universal
Mother, Earth mother, The Lady. She is the source of fertility,
endless wisdom and caresses. She is represented by the Moon. Her
symbol is a moon with a crescent on each side - the triple goddess.

The importance
of the Goddess symbol for women cannot be overstressed. The image
of the Goddess inspires women to see ourselves as divine, our bodies
as sacred, the changing phases of our lives as holy, our aggression
as healthy, our anger as purifying, and our power to nurture and
create, but also to limit and destroy when necessary, as the very
force that sustains all life. Starhawk
