Hematite; Howlite

Courtesy of Miki Sidhe Wolf

Stone: Hematite
Color: Dark grey
Associated Element: Fire
Energy: Projective
Magickal Powers/Uses: Hematite is an iron ore and is therefore actually more of a metal than a stone. Its name derives from the Greek word for blood because its streak, or powdered form, is red in color. It is completely opaque, has a metallic luster, and is sometimes seen in a red-brown variety. Hematite is useful for protection and healing, most specifically nervousness, stress, and bone disorders. Hematite is magnetic and is therefore used to draw out illness and negativity. It is heavy and cool to the touch. It also develops mental capabilities and stimulates the intellect. Hematite can help focus attention and assist with grounding. Many people have success with scrying with hematite as well. It is commonly found in Mexico, Brazil, Australia, England, and the upper Midwestern United States.

Stone: Howlite
Color: White with grey/black veins, blotches, or streaks
Associated Element: Earth
Energy: Receptive
Magickal Powers/Uses: Howlite is an opaque, creamy white stone that relieves stress and tension and eliminates anger, quick tempers, and rudeness. Howlite encourages patience, appreciation of beauty, tactfulness, and calmness. It is also a stone of the mind, fostering memory and knowledge. Howlite is used in balancing the upper charkas and in healing diseases of the bones and teeth. Because of its high calcium content, it is also a good choice for pregnant or nursing mothers. It can be used as a stone of balance and harmony, since it is both black and white and symbolizes the blending of opposites. Howlite holds dye very well and, when dyed blue, it is sold as a less expensive substitute for turquoise. It is also a relatively soft stone and should be handled gently. Howlite is primarily found in Canada and the West Coast of the United States.
